Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" is an innovative, classic jazz album that has stood the test of time.  Recorded in March of 1959, "Kind of Blue" brought together seven, now legendary, musicians in the prime of their careers; tenor saxophonist John Coltran, alto saxophonist, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, pianists Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb and, of course, trumpeter Miles Davis.

Here are 3 more things to know about 08.17.1959.

1) The best selling jazz record of all time, “Kind of Blue” has been certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and still sells about 5,000 copies per week.

2) To capture spontaneity, Miles Davis provided the band with sketches of scales and melody lines on which to improvise instead of a complete score.

3) Although legend states that the entire album was recorded in a single pass, only “Flamingo Sketches” yielded a complete take on the first try.
